Procedure Overview

Simple Diagnostic Process

The DISCYPHOR DIRECT™ Catheter System delivers an unprecedented level of information by allowing simultaneous functional and anesthetic assessment. In patients suspected of having pain from more than one disc, it is also possible to diagnose discogenic pain at multiple levels, one at a time, through the use of multiple DISCYPHOR DIRECT™ Catheters.

Utilizing the DISCYPHOR DIRECT™ Catheter System, the F.A.D.™ Procedure allows for patient evaluation based on selective intradiscal anesthetic injections, while patients perform the normal activities that typically cause their low back pain.

1. Insert DISCYPHOR DIRECT™ Outer and Inner Needles (View Fluoro Image)

2. Insert DISCYPHOR DIRECT™ Catheter (View Fluoro Image)

3. Remove both needles simultaneously (View Fluoro Image)

4. Attach stopcock assembly and balloon inflation assembly: "blue to blue"

5. Inflate the balloon (View Fluoro Image)

6. Attach injection assembly: "white to white"

7. Secure catheter to patient

8. Have patient elicit typical back pain. Record patient's pain score(s) and range of motion

9. Inject 1 cc of anesthetic into the targeted disc

10. Have patient reassume the same pain-eliciting posture or activity. Record patient's pain score(s) and range of motion

11. Compare pre- and post-injection pain scores and range of motion to identify source(s) of discogenic pain

Judging by the effectiveness of the anesthetic in relieving pain and increasing range of motion, the specific disc(s) producing back pain can be identified. This diagnostic information can be used to help determine appropriate treatment options for the patient.
